21255b. (commemorative creamer)
c.1900. Attractive, stout creamer, featuring a detailed full color image of the “Light-House,
Biloxi, Miss”. A distinctive piece, featuring a fine, full color
image detailing the tall cast iron light tower, walkway and keeper’s dwelling
perched on the watery point. The Biloxi Lighthouse was one of three Mississippi
Sound Lighthouses authorized in 1847. Cast iron plates were bolted together to
form a metal wrapper around a brick liner. The tower was completed in the spring
of 1848. The creamer is of a classic style, enhanced by a short spout and handle
on top with a very pretty gilded borders and cobalt blue body color. Marked
“Wheelock China, Made in Germany for Biloxi Hardware Co., Biloxi, Miss.
Dresden”. This beautiful collector’s piece measures a full 3 ¾” high x 3
½” wide. This is a wonderful, early commemorative piece, clean and bright,
very little if any wear. (VG+). $88. 22428. NOTICE TO MARINERS. COAST OF MISSISSIPPI. Light-House on Merrill Shell Bank, instead of the Light-Vessel. "….a light-house on a screw-pile foundation has been erected on the shoal to mark the position heretofore occupied by the light-vessel at Merrill’s Shell Bank. The foundation is square in plan, and is composed of iron screw piles; is surmounted by a wooden superstructure, with lantern above its centre. The height at the focal plane is about 45 feet above mean sea level. The illuminating apparatus is a lens of the fourth order of the system of Fresnel, showing a fixed light of the natural color, which in ordinary states of the weather should be visible from the deck of a vessel (ten feet above the water) about eleven nautical miles. The light-house will be lighted up for the first time at sun-down on the 10th of August next, and will be kept burning during that and every night thereafter until further orders. On the same day (August 10) the Merrill Shall Bank light-vessel will be removed from her station and will not be replaced. By order of the Light-house Board: Wm. F. Smith, Engineer Secretary, Office of the Light-House Board, Washington, July 9, 1860." Clean, crisp save three coffee-like spots, with original light folds. 8" x 13 ½". (VG) $148 net.
Original U. S. Light House Establishment Photographs by Herbert Bamber Engineer, United States Lighthouse Establishment The original photographs were taken by Herbert Bamber, a civil engineer for the US Light-House Establishment during the period 1892-93. During this period, Mr. Bamber traveled the entire country surveying and photographing the light stations for the LH Establishment files. The original photos that he took are today in the National Archives and you can see many reproduced in lighthouse references. However, Mr. Bamber made an extra print of each photograph for his own files and these photographs were found in his barn in the Midwest a few years ago. These were original photographs, hand printed at the lighthouse location in 1892-93. You will note that many of these views show the keeper or his family posed, as photographers were somewhat rare and special. These rare early views were from a process known as cyanotype, named for one chemical, cyan, that is used, thus the blue/white coloring rather than the traditional black/white. Most photographs printed in this manner show considerable detail. The process was commonly used in the field, and by amateurs at home during the period 1880-1920 because of its relative ease compared to other chemical processes. Photos measure 8" x 10" and are nicely matted to 11" x 14" for framing.

C25279. (research report copy) Round Island Light House, Mississippi 1833-1998. The lighthouse known as Round Island Lighthouse in Pascagoula, Mississippi was established in 1834. The tower was replaced by a new 50-foot brick tower in 1859, fitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens. In 1944 the light was automated and by 1949 deactivated entirely. The lighthouse was destroyed by Hurricane Georges in 1998. The Round Island Lighthouse Preservation Society is now working to rebuild the lighthouse using as much of the original tower as possible and the area will eventually be part of a public park. This lot of research information was put together from government archives in 1989 and consists of over 55 unbound copy pages of documents, logbooks, photos and more. Included are copies of historical accounts and descriptions, light station logbook pages, record of keepers, contract for building light house, site plan, source information compiled by author David L. Cipra, time line for station, copies of early photo views, account of the Round Island Filibustering Affair, and more. Nice lot. $12.
